CAS Open Source Software

Hi Everyone,

My blog idea was to create a tutorial about my experience using some packages in R to write point and boundary data into a KML file. This file can then be viewed and further modified in Google Earth.

I used a combination of the tutorials found here in order to achieve the result.
Introduction to visualising spatial data in R (http://cran.r-project.org/doc/contrib/intro-spatial-rl.pdf)
plotKML package (http://gsif.isric.org/doku.php?id=wiki:tutorial_plotkml)

My hope is to have this ready by sometime in the new year for editing. Does anyone else have experience using these packages / tutorials?

Hi Everyone,
I apologize for not getting this done sooner. In order to get myself started and to have more people have a chance to review the material, I thought maybe I could start writing the draft in parts on the forum to get input. This will also encourage me to move faster on this document! Formatting will be done after the content is complete.

Hi Everyone,

Here is the entire post in it's very rough draft. I will now work on cleaning up the code, making sure it runs correctly and posting associated screenshots. If anyone has any general feedback, it would be appreciated.

Thanks Simon. I haven't looked at the content of your post in detail, but I like the subject matter—-I have had to use R to create and process KML files in the past, and I think this blog post would have saved me some time.

Can you create a page for it in the draft blogs section at http://opensourcesoftware.casact.org/draft-blogs ? When that's done it'll show up along side the two posts (by Greg McNulty and myseldf) that are currently being edited. For the rest of the committee members, would two of you volunteer to review this post? This looks like a good opportunity to contribute if you are interested in learning about mapping and google earth and/or R.
